ROBIN (TOBIAS) KASOWITZ

The first time I sank my hands into the soft concoction of dirt, minerals and water, I was hooked. I touch, it moves. I smooth fingerprints out, it holds them. The pieces emerge possessing that distinct human touch. They’re solid, bold entities, taking their place in an ever-changing world, while eternally holding a single moment in time. For me it’s magic!

Artist Statement

Always at the core of my creative journey is the exploration of the feminine. I’m not interested in generic equality or women wearing admired male attributes like stretched out, oversized hand me downs. My art takes aim at reclaiming, scrutinizing and honoring the value/power of the feminine. I recognize that female and male attributes are not binary. They flow on a spectrum gifted to all humans.

My body of work falls into 3 categories. 1. Life size Female Power Symbols that embody profoundly important feminine traits, such as mentoring, intuition, emotion…These figures are substantial, vulnerable and strong. They are elevated above eye level, holding a position of reverence. 2. Installation art that utilizes and incorporates the viewer as a material in the creative process. I’m interested in inviting the audience to become an integral and active part of the ongoing creation. I want to provide a space of involvement, uncertainty and continuous change. A space that shifts and expands the static role of art, space and viewer. 3. To explore, collaborate and honor the significance of materiality. I am captivated by blown out tires. Historically tires have a masculine association. Yet I see them holding significant feminine traits. They are circular, expressive and hold deep memories within them. They’re mysterious, flexible but very strong. When they are thoughtlessly approached they can be cutting but with knowledge and consideration they become exceptional collaborators. Clay and tire have characteristics that both complement and oppose each other. This tension intrigues me. It brings forth concepts of destruction, transformation and transcendence and ignites my creativity.
